When I Got My New Dog
I asked for strength that I might rear her
perfectly;
I was given weakness that I might feed her more treats.
I asked for good health that I might rest easy;
I was given a "special needs" dog that I might know nurturing.
I asked for an obedient dog that I might feel
proud;
I was given stubbornness that I might feel humble.
I asked for compliance that I might feel masterful;
I was given a clown that I might laugh.
I asked for a companion that I might not feel
lonely;
I was given a best friend that I would feel loved.
I got nothing I asked for,
But everything that I needed.

Shot And Killed After Only 3 Months On The Force
Buddy, a German Shepherd was shot and killed in the head
while trying to apprehend a suspect in a park in East Bremerton. Buddy's
partner returned fire wounding the suspect. They were responding to a
report of gunshots when Officer Mike Davis, ordered Buddy to chase the
suspect. The suspect once shooting Buddy fired at least one shot at Davis.
Within a few hours of Buddy's death people were sending sympathy cards
and flowers. Although Buddy didn't get to serve with the canine unit very
long he certainly did his job without question.
First Canine To Be Shot In The Line Of Duty In 20 Years
Gero was the first Police dog to be killed while on duty
in 20 years of history in Colorado. The five year old German Shepherd
who lived with his partner, Geraldine Earthman was killed when he placed
himself between his partner and another officer who was firing at them.
Gero without thinking took the fatal bullet that could have taken one
of the officers lives that day. Gero was memorialized just like any human
fellow officer would have been.
A Few Words For Them
Of all the working dogs police dogs are probably the most likely to lose their lives in the line of duty. It goes without saying how much we owe to these wonderful canines for the loyalty they show and the protection they give us. This picture says it all when it comes to the disciplinethese dogs are taught and the intelligence they have.
Police Dog From Vancouver Killed During A Car Theft
For seven years Nitro worked with Vancouver Police
Constable Howard Rutter. During that seven years there was a bond built
between the two that only death would break. Unfortunately that was
exactly what happened on January 23, 2006. Nitro lost his life while
on duty that night doing what he always did, catching the bad guy. In
1997 Nitro, a pure bred German Shepherd puppy came to the station without
a name. His handlers appealed to have him become a member and over 2000
children sent in names before deciding on his name Nitro. Most police
dogs are trained to take a suspect down by the arm, but Nitro developed
his own technique and would grab the ankle which became most effective.
Continued
In 1999 Nitro became a full Police Dog. Him an his
partner did everything together building a bond that was unbreakable
with trust and respect. When working together they were a hard team
to beat. On January 23, 2006 Nitro and Rutter were heading for a stolen
car that was already being followed by police. Nitro and Rutter were
behind the car when it came to a stop. Rutter then gave Nitro the order
to pursue two suspects that fled the car on foot. There was a train
where the car had stopped and one of the suspects jumped into the boxcar
with Nitro right behind him. Nitro grabbed his leg and hung on just
like he had done hundreds of times before. This time however something
happened that was unthinkable, the train started moving and Nitro still
held on, sweeping him under the train and killing him immediately. Rutter
could do nothing but watch as his partner lay trapped under the train.
The suspect escaped and was later captured.
